departure of Ottoman Muslim refugees with their worldly possessions in large
bags, boarding a train, during the population exchange that took place
between Turkey & Greece by treaty in the spring of 1923, after the Greco-Turkish War
and before the following Treaty of Lausanne; unused
carte postale from Editor D. Sonides in Salonika, minor corner & edge wear. The exchange effectively put a halt to
horrific ethnic cleansings previously experienced by civilians loyal to both
sides during the war. The cost? About 500,000 Muslims & 1,500,000 Orthodox
Christians were uprooted from their homes & not allowed to return. Rare, historic &
