M." real photo postcard posted APR 22 1912 from Pomona California, showing a
sarcastic sign erected by small-town residents after they lost several dogs
& chickens under the wheels of passing autos. [Explained but not illustrated
in an old issue of The Strand Magazine.] The limit on what later became US
Route 5 was, at the time, 20 miles per hour. Its effectiveness may be judged
by the fact that they stopped to take the photo & by the message on back:
'Here is a sign we run across coming home from the 101 Ranch Show at Santa
Ana. A fellow would have to be 'going some' to slow down to this limit.'
Amused the passengers decided to photograph it, creating a obviously unique
memento. Addressed to Miss Lula B. Parr in Modesto California, care of the
Miller Bros & Arlington Wild West Show. A humorous piece of roadside
