& VIRGIN ISLANDS. "HOW / CRUZAN® / RUM IS
MADE / VIRGIN ISLANDS RUM INDUSTRIES" showing its processing of bulk
molasses through bulk receiving, mixing tanks, mash fermenters, heaters,
condensers, etc.; unused continental postcard in excellent condition.
Exceptionally detailed with good graphics.
ANTARCTICA & ARGENTINA. "LU1ZC" Destacamento Naval Decepcion QSL viewcard in 2 panels, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Deception Navy Attachment & giving its history in some detail, also providing information about the Radio Amateur Auxiliary Service of the Navy & the Argentine Group of CW - GACW. Deception is an island in the South Shetland Islands near Antarctica. Their sovereignty is disputed by Great Britain (who claims them as part of the British Antarctic Territory), Chile (who claims them as part of Antártica Chilena Province), & Argentina. One corner has 2 long creases. Rare & exceptionally interesting.
ARIZONA & PROPELLER AVIATION. INTERMOUNTAIN AIR SERVICE. Continental black & white photo of its DeHavilland Canada DHC-4 (N6080) parked on an overcast day near a building, good focus & composition, contrast just a bit low. Rare. This aircraft continued in service with Evergreen Airlines -- when its assets were transferred (along with with a CIA proprietary company called Intermountain Aviation Incorporated) -- so the image is necessarily pre-November 1975. Home location was Marana Air Park Arizona. Rare and exceptionally interesting. $15.00
AUTHORS & MISSOURI. MARK TWAIN. "U. S. Government Yards and Fleet of Mississippi River Commission, St. Louis, Mo." showing the U. S. Snagboat Wright alongside the sternwheeler U. S. Engineering Department Number 9; black & white post card with undivided back mailed 1906 at St. Louis, back toned from album contact especially at the corners, front cancel ink smear in sky & neat Warren Ohio auxiliary mark mostly in the water. Snag boats removed hazards to navigation -- such as sunken logs - with a split bow, so they could get over it and lift the snag with an A-frame crane. These features make the postcard exceptionally interesting. But there is more: the Wright's Captain Bixby taught author Mark Twain much of what he knew about the Mississippi.
AUTOS & EXPOSITIONS. "Ford No. 2 Winner of Coast to Coast Race At A. Y. E. / O. T. FRASCH SEATTLE 234" showing the disputed winner at the Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition, wreath on its radiator, rags on the floor to catch dripping oil; real photo postcard mailed 1909 at Mabton Washington to to Farnhamville Iowa, slight oxidation consistent with age. A good look at the length of the axle that figured in the dispute. Signage on the back wall in good focus provides interesting text for mining equipment displays nearby: the hand power rock drill offered by the Mining Supply Co. of New York, for example. The photographer was Otto Theodore Frasch. Rare & seldom offered.
AUSTRIA & NUMISMATICS. "Serie 1 Nr. 2 Postkarte mit Nationalflagge / Münzwesen / Oesterreich." unused Postkarte on pebbled stock with deeply embossed images of 9 different coins circulating in Austria circa 1982 - 1902 (1 Heller, 2 Heller, 20 Heller, 20 gold Kronen, etc.) & the Austrian flag; just a few small marks due to album toning, small bottom corner crease, otherwise quite fresh. Interesting center table gives 10 different exchange rates for 6 of the coins, meant to help merchants with travelers; later editions did not have as much detail. Rare; there are several numismatic postcards for this country, but this is probably the hardest one to get.
BARBADOS . "SUGAR PLANTATION BARBADOS, CARTING SUGAR / CANES TO THE MILL" interesting work scene includes donkey-drawn wagons, woman sweeping up, and a man carrying a load on his head. black & white postcard from W. L. Johnson, unused, album impressions at the corners, slight yellowing of the paper with age, 2 very light small spots of toning on the back that most people would miss, good edges.
BARBERS & PAKISTAN. "Karachi--Barber" unique printer's proof for a real photo postcard (good contrast & focus) that would eventually be entitled 'Karachi--Street Barber' (change noted on back), cropping lines on front to delimit the image ultimately shown, main image cut out & put on a grayish background to obscure unwanted clutter in the original shot. Obviously unique & exceptionally interesting because it shows how postcards are made.
LOGGING & WASHINGTON STATE. "510 HANDLING LUMBER WITH ELECTRICITY GRAYS HARBOR, WN." sepia-tone real photo post card mailed 1925 from Aberdeen. An interesting work scene: men have traveled on bicycles (parked nearby) to meet a truck, whose green lumber is hauled up by a specialized device to the top of a stack for drying. The bicycles & the photograph of the stacks bracing each other convey a good feel for the extent of such operations, which were to peak just a couple of years later.
MILITARY AVIATION & ZEPPELINS. "MOTOR DRIVEN WAR AIRSHIP" showing the invention of Major von Perseval; Tuck Oilette postcard 9495, mailed 1911 from Berlin to Arkansas, bottom corners creased, minor corner & edge wear. Described in interesting detail on the back. Hard to find.
NATIVE AMERICANS & WYOMING. "Saint Stephen's / Mission // St. Stephens / Wyoming" multiview Espeprint postcard bearing a JUN 24 1958 hand cancel (but no stamp) & an interesting & lengthy note about the facility all over the back by L. M. Miles, SJ. Nine views include: chapel, shrine, main building, chapel interior, sisters building, gymnasium exterior & interior, etc. A little wear to one upper corner & a little toning along one short front edge. This Catholic mission ministers to the Arapahoe & Shoshoni Indians from the Wind River Reservation.
OHIO & RAILROADS. "Dayton, Covington And Piqua Traction Co. / FREIGHT STATION. / Fast Freight and Express Service To All Points North, South, East And West" including 3 horse-drawn wagons backed into the station & an interurban waiting for a load; unused Azo (triangles up) real photo post card with wonderful contrast, composition & focus; good edges. Annotated on the back in pencil by a local historian who we know to be reliable: "Dayton, Ohio - N. W. Corner of Ludlow and Stout St. / Ticket Office 32 Ludlow at Arcade Entrance". Most likely one-of-a-kind: no publisher or photographer credit, & no caption as a commercial product would have. Belongs in a museum.
PIONEER AVIATION. UNIVERSAL AIR LINES SYSTEM. Unused monochromatic green regular-size postcard showing its Ford Stout (NC9069) flying low over trees & a nearby lake, seen from an even higher vantage point; airline logo on back with 1928 copyright & 'ENROUTE / From ______ / To _________' preprinted on back for a passenger's convenience, 2 light small circular indents show on back from ticket being stamped. Super rare early commercial aviation.
RIVER SHIPPING & WEST VIRGINIA. 1903 Smiley Tow Boat Company (Cincinnati Ohio & Ashland Kentucky) neatly typed invoice to Messrs. Withers & Van Devender (Parkersburg West Virginia) for logs towed from Guyan to Pomeroy Ohio & Twelve Pole West Virginia to Pomeroy & another trip from Point Pleasant. Illustrated billhead shows the steamer Catherine Davis underway. We could not find paper memorabilia of any kind offered for this towing company or for the ship when we searched the Internet. Edges a bit rough, and a little dark toning from contact with acidic papers, folded twice to fit within an envelope. Belongs in a museum.
