Fill serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier U.S.S. INTREPID (CVA-11). Most of these letters are on #6 size envelopes that were opened roughly by his girlfriend in Washington DC--who was evidently eager to read the contents (not provided). 3-c Liberty & 4-c Lincoln stamps on most. One has violet cachet 'UNITED STATES NAVY / POWER AT SEA / for / HOMELAND PROTECTION'. Includes 3 postcards, 2 of which were mailed from The Netherlands waters with US stamps. One could do an interesting study of these covers for cancel quality on ordinary mail. This carrier was an important part of naval aviation in this period, because it was establishing and demonstrating that carrier launches could be made in a much greater variety of wind conditions than was previously believed. $50.00 for all!
