Message in part: 'The place where I marked the x is where the Jews had that fight Fourth of July night." The name is sometimes seen as Eastlake Park. JOHNSON / CHIMNEY SWEEP / 971 BROADWAY / PRONE OAK 2176" in Oakland California with attention-getting wagon & 2 workers in costume before the business (name & address on awning) established by Jewish immigrant (from Czernowitz Bukovina ) Adolph Rittigstein. Sepia-tone Azo (triangles up) real photo divided back post card with wonderful depth-of-field & lighting that brings out the details. The Rittigstein (& Son) business prospered by supplying paints, oils, hardware, locksmithing & chimney sweeping services from 1889 - 1910. Belongs in a museum. "A Shepherd and his Herd on Jewish National Fund Land in the / Valley of Jezreel" sepia-tone from K. Hefner & J. Berger, numbered 17 on back, made in Poland, unused, trivial corner wear. The land referred to in the caption was purchased in 1921 & was rapidly transformed from malarial 'death swamps' by productive kibbutzim such as Nahalal, Kfar Yechezkel, Ein Charod & Bet Alfa. "BECKMESSER HANS SACHS VEIT PROGNER / NÜRNBERGER MEISTERSINGER" showing a group of 3 busts in a striking image, number 5031 from Herman Martin, unused Postkarte, slight yellowing of the paper with age, minor wear at 2 corners. Hans Sachs was a 16th century mastersinger & songwriter, about whom (among others) Richard Wagner composed a long opera. I. on the [21st] / day of [Oct] 189, at 9 o'clock . 1m., for / the transaction of business. / Respectfully, [A. H. Harmon] / Secretary" government postal card mailed from Columbus to nearby Delaware Ohio (arrival mark on the 16th). The material shown here in square brackets [ ] was filled in by hand. The Congregation Kal A Kodesh Beneh Israel (Holy Congregation of Children of Israel) was founded in 1824 in Ohio by a majority of the Israelites in the Cincinnati area, and so became a frontier outpost of Judaism. Soon its name changed to Congregation Kahl aKodish Bene Israel, which name endures today, as does its abbreviation. Not much early material is ever seen or offered from this important congregation. "Jews' House and Steep Hill, Lincoln Valentines Series" in England. Postcard with black & white on paper yellowing with age. The approximately 900-year-old building served as a Jewish synagogue in the Middle Ages, and is still used for some Jewish functions today. The name on the storefront prominently at the left bears the name of M. Pickering. "J. Frank, pinx. Rothenburg o. T. / Judengasse" signed art depicting 2 street musicians entertaining on the Jewish Lane of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, unused postcard with a Bavarian scene. This community expelled in Jewish citizen in October of 1938, so the name of the lane is unlikely to survive to present-day. $5.00 bj
"King David's tomb on Mr. Zion, Jerusalem, one the holiest sites in the tradition of Israel" (also captioned in Hebrew). Unused chrome post card. $2.50 *
"Lampes Juives du Musée Ste-Anne, JERUSALEM / ... / But the wise virgins took oil in the vessels with lamp ... And the foolish said to the wise : Give us of your oil, ..." unused black & white carte postale, very light toning in front caption area, good edges. The verse is in from Mat. 25, 4, 8 & is stated in other languages including German & French. $2.00 rjm
"MAIN STREET, CENTERBURG, OHIO" real photo mailed 1907, published by D. W. Short, writing on front, trivial corner wear. Prominent near the left is the entire front of the Jesse Spira Clothing store, next to a grocery. An interview published by the Columbus Jewish Historical Society puts the Spira's as the only Jewish family in Centerburg at the time, with the nature of their business uncertain. This postcard provides the answer. "Makes you look like a Millionaire. Won't cost much either. Ask us: Reitz & Langguth / 2769 W. 25th St., 4279 Pearl Road, S. W. Makers of Smart Clothes" showing the proprietors (Mathew Reitz & Phil Langguth) standing in front of their store in Cleveland, unused litho-chrome postcard, fairly fresh with good edges. Necessarily pre-1913 when their firm was dissolved. Truly rare. Two Reitz family members (René Reitz and his mother Matilde Reitz) have had Yad Vashem recognize them as "Righteous Among the Nations" for the aid they extended to Jewish refugees in France during the Holocaust. "METALLUM / VACUUM / ½WATT / JOH. KREMENEZKY, WIEN / XX. DRESDNERSTR. 57 TEL. 42-0-60" unused advertising card for an incandescent light bulb business owned by Johann Kremenezky, founder of the Jewish National Fund and Herzl's financier; slightly taller than a regular-size postcard, small corner crease, other minor corner wear. Reverse side carries a handwritten message (spellings as found): 'Dear Sir - Enclosed I'm sending yoy the proposal that you have sended me, hopping that you will give me your agency to the Portuguese Colonys.' Yona Krementzky, another spelling of his name, headed the JNF-KKL. Among other things, he initiated the Golden Book, and the publication of JNF stamps. Tying all it together, and among his many honors, he was nominated as one of the Dignitory Citizens of Vienna. This document is not signed but it is obviously an attempt to further his business. $35.00 jea

"M. S. 'HIKAWA MARU' / ... / TRANS-PACIFIC PASSENGER SERVICE / N. Y. K. LINE" showing her underway near shore, unused postcard, one corner with 2 creases, otherwise fairly fresh. Shown. This ship assisted Jewish refugees to escape from the Holocaust to Canada, and later it became a hospital ship during World War II.
