Circa-1907 Dairen (previously Port Arthur & Dalny & Дальний; subsequently Dalian & 大连市) under Japanese occupation following the Russo-Japanese War. Lot of 10 unused postcards from the same booklet (original owner sent 2 which we do not have), all removed neatly, all with minor corner wear, all lightly toned backs, all specifying DAIREN in English before captioning continues in Japanese:

  • "No. 1 THE LARGE PIER" including ship ..UMARU docked, long internal crease near left front edge.
  • "No. 2 NIHOMBASHI BRIDGE" with streetcar, cart & pedestrian traffic
  • "No. 4 OYAMA STREET" with carts, pedestrians & a bicyclist
  • "No. 5 TEH WEST-PARK" with a few people & fence (above left)
  • "No. 6 KODAMA STREET" with streetcar tracks & pedestrians (above right)
  • "No. 7 VIEW OF ROKOTAN" with a shoot used to transport goods to ships & a few people for scale (above left)
  • "No. 9 HOSHI-GAURA, BEACH" with a junk & crew, some ice (above right)
  • "No. 10 KIICHO STREET" with 2 streetcars & a few pedestrians (above right)
  • "No. 11 A PART OF RUSSIAN STREET" in winter, 2 junks nearby (above left)
  • "No. 12 KAMBU STREET" with streetcar & electric poles

The winter scenes are important: the harbor did not often ice in -- which was why the Russians were willing to fight the Japanese for a year-round port which they otherwise would not have. If the English in the captions surprises you, recall that the British occupied it before the Russians, and consider that it was principally American & British money that financed the Japanese during that war! All 10 postcards: $50.00 mjc
